NCAA Tournament: The Waiting Begins
March 9, 2007
The main goal of every Division I men’s basketball team is to make the NCAA Tournament. When it comes down to it, getting invited to the Big Dance can make or break a season for most programs.
Now that the regular season is over and the conference tournaments are winding down, there is only one thing left to do. That’s right; teams and fans have to wait until Selection Sunday to see who was lucky enough to get one of the 65 invites.
This waiting process is likened to a drip torture by some people, and it is easy to see why. This holds especially true for teams that are on the proverbial “bubble.” When a team is on the bubble it means that the selection committee could go either way on them.
Take the West Virginia University Mountaineers for example; they are a classic bubble team waiting to hear their name called on Selection Sunday. With a record of 22-9, and a 9-7 mark in the powerful Big East, you would think that they were a lock for the tournament. But then again, the committee looks at much more than the overall record. They consider strength of schedule, big wins, and how hot a team is playing. And to add insult to injury, every at large selection is picked subjectively by the committee. In other words, there is no formula for making sure that the right teams get picked.
So until Selection Sunday, teams, players, and fans can only wait and wonder. Talk about tons of excitement before the first round even tips off!
