On the Effects of Being Stationary

March 20, 2007

Young Romani Women

Being stationary has certainly had its effect on the Romani community. When they were nomadic, separation between the Rom and the Gaje was easily maintained. However, now that more interaction with the community is unavoidable, we are witnessing significant changes from one generation to the next.

One of these changes is that Romani men are now permitted to marry Mexican women, even though the women are not permitted to marry Mexican men. The woman is then expected to adopt the dress and customs of the Rom, learn the language and stay at home to care for her children. She then becomes responsible for cultural transmission. Some explained that the only thing new wives cannot do is learn to read palms.

Being stationary has led to a number of controversial changes among the youth. About 15 years ago, the women used around 10 meters of cloth for their dresses, blouses and bags. Now they use only three. The dresses are more formfitting and model modern styles. The difference is even greater among the daughters of these women. Young women in their teens now wear denim skirts, boots and tank tops. They often show their ankles and wear fashionable jewelry. This has become a hot point in many families, especially for the fathers who try to convince them to carry on the traditions.

Attending public schools has also affected the community. Children are raised speaking Romani first and then Spanish. The children make Mexican friends and quickly advance in Spanish, often influencing Romani with Spanish verb forms, diminutives or even sentence structures. They become more and more aware of Internet, pop music, dating and dancing. All of these outside influences have become, or are becoming, an interesting part of modern Romani culture, causing repercussions that are not yet fully understood.
