UCLA vs. Pitt
March 21, 2007
The most intriguing Sweet 16 match up is surely the one between UCLA and Pitt. Sure, the other seven games are going to be great contests, but this is the one that a lot of people are waiting for. But why has this game been talked about so much over the past few days?
Simply put, millions of people want to watch UCLA head coach Ben Howland square off against his former team and protégé Jamie Dixon. When Howland left Pitt for the west coast, Dixon stepped in and never missed a beat. Although these two teams will never schedule a game during the regular season, there is no way around it in the NCAA Tournament. That is why on Thursday at 940 pm the two teams will be set to face each other in one of the most important games of the year.
Pitt heads into the game with an overall record of 29-7, while UCLA is 28-5. Both teams play in very competitive conferences, and better yet, like to play a similar style game. This should make for a low scoring affair that will be won by the team that executes the best.
Both teams had second round scares, but managed to come out on top. Pitt needed overtime to get past VCU, and UCLA had to fight off a late run by Indiana in order to advance. But with several days to rest, both teams should be ready for this match up.
Look for UCLA to come out on top. Although the teams are evenly matched, the game is being played in San Jose, California. This home court advantage should be enough for the Bruins to sneak into the Elite 8.
