Florida Gators: 2007 National Champions
April 3, 2007
The University of Florida Gators have done something that most other teams have not been able to accomplish. They repeated as NCAA Division I men’s basketball National Champions. This is a tough task, to say the least, and one that has many people thinking that they may be the best team of all time.
In the championship game, the Gators outdid the Ohio State Buckeyes by the score of 84 to 75. Although the Buckeyes put up a fight, it felt as if they were never in the game. Florida was simply too fast and athletic, and every time that they seemed to lose control they hit another big shot to get right back on track.
Al Horford led the Gators with 18 points and 12 rebounds. He had plenty of help from Taurean Green who chipped in 16 points and 6 assists. Although none of the Gators had huge games, everybody who played contributed in one way, shape, or form.
The Gators were the first team to repeat as champs since Duke in 1991-1992. They finished the season with a 35-5 record; the Buckeyes finished at 35-4.
The question on everybody’s mind at this point is whether or not head coach Billy Donovan will be back at the helm next season. There are strong indications that he is heading to Kentucky; although nothing has been confirmed.
But no matter what happens in the years to come, college basketball will forever be grateful for the excitement that the Gators brought to the game over the past two years.
