Ohio State: Looking Towards the Future
April 20, 2007
The Ohio State Buckeyes men’s basketball team would be best served to start looking at the future without Greg Oden. It appears that Oden is going to declare his eligibility for the NBA Draft today. Additionally, he plans on hiring an agent which means that he will not be able to go back on this decision. Unfortunately for the Buckeyes, Oden only stuck around for one year. Although it was a great season for him as well as the team, it is safe to say that a few more years is something that the college basketball world would have loved to see.
But in addition to Oden, the Buckeyes may also be losing a couple other players. Both Mike Conley Jr. and Daequan Cook are considering a jump to the NBA as well. Unlike Oden, it appears that these two guys will not hire an agent. This will give them the chance to test the NBA water, but go back to school if they decide that they are not going to get drafted high enough this time around.
It is hard to say how this situation will shake out, but one thing is for sure. The Buckeyes will have an entirely different look next season. If all of these guys end up leaving Columbus, the Buckeyes will be hard pressed to make another run through the NCAA Tournament.
Right now, the only thing that Buckeyes fans can do is watch and wait.
