American League Update
April 23, 2007
As the Major League Baseball season moves along, the good teams begin to separate from those who are trying to hang on for dear life. Although it is still too early to see exactly how the season is going to progress, a few things have become much clearer in the American League.
Let’s begin in the ever powerful East division. The Boston Red Sox are leading the way with a 12-5 record. This is the best record in baseball, and is definitely the type of start that the team was hoping for. Surprisingly, the Baltimore Orioles are 1 ½ games back with a record of 11-7. And where are the Yankees, you may ask? After losing their last three games to the Red Sox they are 8-9 which is good enough for four games out of first.
Moving to the Central division, the Minnesota Twins have jumped out to a solid 11-7 start. But the Detroit Tigers, Cleveland Indians, and Chicago White Sox are all within 1 ½ games of first. Just like last year, the race for first in this division is shaping up to be a good one.
Finally, the West division is cluttered at the top. At 9-9 the Los Angeles Angels and Oakland Athletics are tied for first place. They are followed by the Texas Rangers at 8-10 and the Seattle Mariners at 5-9.
Although there are quite a few games to be played, a lot of teams are showing early on that they are going to be worthy contenders. The question now is, “who can keep things going?”
