Pittsburgh Pirates: Making some Noise

April 27, 2007

After getting off to a hot start, the Pittsburgh Pirates cooled off. At that time, it appeared that they were going to do their usual and fade from playoff contention early in the season. But this time around, the Pirates seem to be on a different path. Perhaps, this could be the path that is going to lead them to the post season for the first time in over a decade.

Through 20 games, the Pirates are sitting at 10-10. Although this is far from being the best record in the league, .500 baseball is just what the organization needs at this time. This record is good enough for second place in the NL Central division and only 2 ½ games out of first place.

So how are the Pirates doing it? Simply put, their pitching staff has been better this year than ever before. Of course, they have had some downfalls along the way, but what team doesn’t? For instance, take a look at Tom Gorzelanny. Through four games he has a 3-0 record, and has developed into one of the best young pitchers in the league. Although his stuff is not overpowering, he has 17 strikeouts with only 6 walks. And with an ERA of only 2.05, this is among the best of all National League starters.

Rounding out the starting staff are Ian Snell, Paul Maholm, Zach Duke, and Tony Armas.

Can the Pirates continue to play this way? Only time will tell. But one thing is for sure; Bucco fans are excited!
