Writing Contest Alert: The Pagan Fiction Award

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

BBI Media and Llewellyn Publications present…Any Pagan writers out there, or writers of Pagan content? As you’re contemplating fiction to give away on April 23, make sure to save yourself something unpublished to enter into The Pagan Fiction Award.

(I found out about this contest while testing the links in Avoiding Publishing Scams: Further Resources. Absolute Write had an announcement on their home page. Another good reason to familiarize yourself with Absolute Write–they announce contests you might not otherwise have heard about, and they’re pretty savvy about restricting their announcements to just the reputable ones.)

BBI Media (who publish SageWoman, PanGaia, and newWitch magazines) and Llewellyn Publications (who probably publish most of the Pagan, New Age, and Metaphysical books you’ve ever encountered) are behind this venture. BBI Media is offering the cash prizes and will publish the first place winner in a near-future PanGaia issue. Llewellyn will include all three prize-winning stories, and consider other finalists for inclusion, in an upcoming anthology.

The contest judges will be Anne Newkirk Niven, Publisher of BBI Media; Elizabeth Barrette, Managing Editor of PanGaia; and Diana Paxson, Editor of Idunna and multiply-published novelist. They’re all great people. Ms. Paxson writes some darn fine fiction, for one thing. And having been published once in newWitch and twice in PanGaia, I can personally relate that Ms. Newkirk Niven and Ms. Barrette are a pleasure to work with.

Which is to say: You may feel free to expect excellence here.

Contest deadline is June 24, 2007. No entry fee required. Story length must be between 3,000 and 8,000 words as measured by MS Word’s word count function. Stories must be new, original, and unpublished–so, once again, you can’t enter the contest with a piece you’ve already posted to the web in celebration of IPSTP Day (for example). Authors need not identify as Pagan but entries must include Pagan content. Please visit the contest web page for full entry guidelines.

Good luck!
