The Lolsingularity Is Near - r u reddy?

May 31, 2007

Things are getting out of hand.

I mean, lolcatz, yes. Lolbrarians, sure. And lolpresidents and lolbees and lolruses on a quest for buckets and so forth.

But, really.

As Xeni Jardin of BoingBoing.net laments, “Dear christ, must everything be LOLcatted now?” It appears it must.

Exhibit A: Lolcatz get literary over at Making Light. Go look.

Exhibit B: Making Light’s proprietess gets lolcatted. It’s loleditors!

Exhibit C: Lolcatting as a coping mechanism for the creeptastic heeby-jeebies induced by Google Maps’ “Street View” feature peeking in ur windowz, spyin ur kitteh.

Exhibits D through Z and AA through FF, inclusive, making Xeni cuss some more. (Do not miss the link to Scott Beale’s ambitious catalog of all things lol, here.)

I’m not sure I remember another internet meme catching on this quickly and proliferating so rapidly. “All your base are belong to us” was a flash in the pan by comparison. The “internet as series of tubes” faux pas went from Next Hot Funny to everyday self-deprecating non-event practically the day after Jon Stewart let the Senator speak for himself. But this lolcatz thing… it’s a pandemic, is what it is. And its tendrils reach not just outward and forward but also backwards in time. Lolcatz eats “all your base.” It eats l337 speak, too.

What else will it eat?

im in an u cant stop me

Beware. The lolsingularity is on its way. U b reddy 4 da FYUCHOOR???

  1. Usually these things get old after a month or so. But LOLcats is still going strong, and branching out into all kinds of LOLmadness.

I’m starting to wonder when people are going to get more originaly about their humor. Though, I do have a confession to make…LOLpresidents made me laugh my arse off.

  2. In re: originality, If you haven’t been there in awhile, you should definitely revisit the Making Light link. The denizens began discussion how to make lolcat pastiches have weight and richness, and then elise up-and-lolcats this. It’s breathtaking.
