Office Lingo (Part 4)… Whew, that was a long way to go!
June 25, 2007
This is the final part of my series designed to help those of you understand office lingo better and add a few new winning phrases to your list. These last couple may not exactly be the most politically correct… but in the right circumstance, they still have plenty of validity.
“Put my butt in a sling”- We’ve all had our butt in a sling at one point or another; it’s when you put your own in one that people really know that you are getting down to business.
“Bump it around a little bit”- This refers to an open idea session where everybody is invited to put their two sense into the mix… no matter how stupid the idea it will be welcome at a bump session.
“Get on their dance card”- The careful balance of business and clients is very much like a dance… but to get into position you have to introduce your self and at least get on their list.
“Make hay while the sun shines”- There is no better time to move a business forward than when the sun is shining and everything is running smoothly.
“100% butts in seats”- This is crunch time. This let’s your work team know that this is a particularly important day of work and they need to have their butt in their desk and working.
“Swinging at the fences”- This is a phrase that lets them know that you are giving it your all.
“Grease the skids”- To keep with the butt referencing, this is another phrase to let everyone know that they really need to get moving on a project. Perhaps not the most politically correct, especially for women, so use this one at your own risk.
“Going back to the salt mines”- This is kind of like going back to the drawing board, except is sucks three times worse!
“Sit on them”- This references making sure that someone gets the job done! “I’m going over to Roger’s office and sit on him.”

“PERFUME THE PIG”- This is when something around the office has just gone so wrong that it stinks to high heaven… and the only thing left to do is make a cover-up that will hold off the stench for as long as possible.
