Lakers after Garnett?
June 27, 2007
With so much talk about a disgruntled Kobe Bryant, most of the basketball world has lost site of Kevin Garnett; another superstar who is not happy with his current situation. And just when things were confusing enough, it appears that Bryant’s team, the Lakers, is pursuing Garnett, a Timberwolves standout for many years.
Although nothing is written in stone, it appears that the Lakers are prepared to give up quite a bit in order to get Garnett in uniform. Early indications report that the Timberwolves want center Andrew Bynum and forward Lamar Odom in exchange for Garnett. And even then, that may not be enough to make the deal go through.
On the surface this looks like a good trade for the Lakers, but at the same time, it seems a bit fishy. Would the Lakers attempt to bring in Garnett if Kobe was on his way out of town? Maybe, maybe not. My guess is that Bryant told management that he will stay in town if they can bring in another star to help him out; just like when he had Shaq on his side in the past. And when it comes down to it, Garnett is among the top players who are looking to relocate before next season.
It will be interesting to see if this rumor ever turns into reality. If it does, look for the Lakers to become an immediate championship contender. There are not too many teams that will be able to slow down this tandem.
