Lifehacker: Required Reading
June 30, 2007
So I just got turned onto this because of BoingBoing (”A Directory of Wonderful Things”). BoingBoing is full of things that make you go, “Cool!” Plus one of its frequent bloggers is Cory Doctorow, an excellent writer of wonderfully weird fiction and a superb writing instructor at Viable Paradise. I read BoingBoing and you should too.
Via BoingBoing, one hears of Rule the Web, “How to Do Anything and Everything on the Internet—Better, Faster, Easier.” And via Rule the Web, one hears of Lifehacker.
Lifehacker is a blog about doing things better. What things? Any things. Things that oil the ball bearings of day-to-day living and smooth the wrinkles out of the business suit of mundane existence. Also things that sprinkle sparkle into a few unexpected corners just to make existence that much less mundane.
Lifehacker recommends the software downloads and web sites that actually save time. Don’t live to geek; geek to live.
In other words, Lifehacker is what it claims to be–a collection of tips for hacking, customizing, and tweaking the hand of technological and societal cards we’re dealt until it’s all aces.
Enough metaphor. Here’s some examples:
- How foul language can help you bypass a telephone auto-library to speak with a real live person.
- How to cut the umbilical cord and free your iPod from the iTunes software
- How to live comfortably on a portable USB storage device
- How to win at anything home improvement
- How to save money by outfitting your office DIY-style
- How to improve your social life to no end
Lifehacker actively encourages readers to email in their own lifehacking tricks, because, hey, content gotta come from somewhere. Email them at “tips” at “lifehacker” dot “com”.
Lifehacker. A must-read for your daily blog trawl. I read it and you should too.
(I’ll probably be saying that about Rule The Web, except I haven’t read it yet. Stay tuned.)
