MLB Midseason Standings: The American League
July 9, 2007
The MLB All Star Break is here, and with that, the standings at this time really show which teams are doing what. When it comes down to it, the teams that are ahead in the standings now may not be ahead when the regular season ends. But with that being said, they are definitely in the best position to hold onto a playoff spot.
In the American League East, the Boston Red Sox are still in first place; they are one team that does not appear to be sputtering in the least bit. Both the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees are 10 games back.
The Detroit Tigers hold a one game lead over the Cleveland Indians in the American League Central. The Minnesota Twins may be eight games back, but they have the firepower to catch up in the second half.
The American League West has been tight all season. At this time, the Los Angeles Angels are holding a slim two and a half game lead over the Seattle Mariners. In third place, the Oakland Athletics find themselves nine games back. But with that in mind, they have been one of the most dangerous second half teams in the MLB over the past couple of seasons.
It will be surprising if the teams that are leading now are still leading at the end of the year; things usually do not work out this way. But after a crazy first half in the American League, it is safe to say that anything can happen down the stretch.
