Phillies Lose Number 10,000
July 16, 2007
Over the past 125 years, no team in Major League Baseball has lost as many games as the Philadelphia Phillies. While this may sound funny, it is anything but for the fans that have gone through the pain year in and year out. If you are, or have ever been a Phillies fan, you know just what this feels like.
The St. Louis Cardinals handed the Phillies loss number 10,000 last night in Philadelphia. But despite the fact that this is nothing to be proud of, the sell out crowd made the most of the situation. As it became more and more obvious that the Phillies were going to lose, fans began to cheer as if they were winning. In fact, many fans held up signs supporting the team, and of course, there 10,000 losses.
The franchise started their losing ways in 1883 when they were known as the Philadelphia Quakers. But no matter what name they have gone by, losing has not been far behind most years.
So which team is next on the list to reach 10,000 losses? At this time, the Atlanta Braves are closest with 9,681 losses. As you can imagine, it will take them a few more years, at the least, to reach this plateau of embarrassment.
It cannot be fun for the Phillies or their fans to be the first team to lose this many games. But at the same time, it is important that they do not live in the past. After all, the future looks bright if they keep moving in the right direction.
