Vick in Big Trouble

July 19, 2007

Michael Vick, the star quarterback of the Atlanta Falcons, is in big trouble with the law. As you may have heard, authorities have been investigating the possibility that Vick was involved in competitive dog fighting. To make things worse on him, it is believed that these fights were taking place on a property that he owned.

On July 26, Vick is expected to appear in federal court in Virginia. Vick, along with three others, will be asked at that time to enter pleas on the felonies. During this time, it is more than likely that a date will be set for a trial that will determine his future; both as a person, and also as an NFL player. Luckily for him, after the court date is set he should be allowed to join the Falcons in training camp.

But unfortunately, it seems that the NFL has once again screwed up. They have decided to let Vick take part in training camp and other league functions until the legal process unwinds. But as you probably remember, Pacman Jones was suspended from the NFL even though he had not been convicted of a crime. What makes the two situations so different? Why did Commissioner Roger Goodell decide to let Vick slide, while sticking it to Pacman? It is this type of inconsistency that makes the NFL look bad as far as cracking down on bad conduct is concerned.

If convicted, Vick could spend up to six years behind bars, and also be hit with a $350,000 fine. Only time will tell what his fate become.
