Best of the Darwin Awards (Part 1)

July 31, 2007

I have been doing a lot of research on some of the greatest moments in history and of course some of my most favorite moments are not perhaps the greatest moments, but they could be some of the funniest.

Of course death is never a funny subject in my opinion, so I pick out my awards very carefully to make sure that either the death was not gruesome or the person did not die at all. Here are a few of my very favorites over the past ten years:

Drilled Sergeant-
Several years back a sergeant of the Air Force got hold of a NATO jet pack and installed in on his Chevy and lit himself down a deserted road. He wanted to break the land speed record is what most experts speculate. Well, we will never know exactly what happened, but we do know that we found a three foot crater in the side of the mountain… with the resemblance of a metal flecks imbedded into the rock. As far as we can tell, the car went down the road successfully for several miles until the sergeant saw the mountain coming up and applied the breaks. Panic ensued as the car kept rocketing towards the mountain and he applied greater force to the brakes which only blew out all four tires at which point he probably realized that his plan was not perhaps the most well thought out…

Terrorist Karma-
One of my all time Darwin awards also happened a few years ago and surrounds the circumstances of a terrorist who had planted himself in the states and was sending out letter bombs to unsuspecting victims. I cannot think of a more appropriate fate for this particular terrorist than what happened. This chap received a letter back in the mail one particular day that read, “Return to Sender- Insufficient Postage.” The curiosity must have overwhelmed him as to what was in the package. The blast must have shook the neighborhood for miles as yet another idiot was laid to rest, but in this case very appropriately.

Chivalry is not dead… Well, now it is-
One of the saddest Darwin stories I have heard, is actually also a great lesson for all of us to keep in mind. This story takes place in Taiwan and it involved the rivalry between two college students for the love a certain young lady. These two fellows decided to challenge each other to a joust on scooters and whoever won would get to pursue the girl. It must have been some woman as these two fools ran head on into each other and died instantly. The real kicker here was when the woman was later questioned she admitted that she did not fancy either of them! The lesson… always make sure the juice is worth the squeeze!
