A Bit of Randomness…

A man who tried crossing from Mexico to Arizona through Altar Valley was hit by lightening and killed, authorities said.
The man made up part of a group of twelve presumed undocumented workers that were crossing the southeast Tucson area Monday night when an electrical storm unleashed. The spokesman for the border patrol, Richard Dewitt, said that the event occurred around 8:30 pm local time.
His companions carried him toward a marked route where the border patrol then found them. Three other men suffered minor wounds.
The man, who was not identified, was hospitalized in Tucson.
I came across this piece of news in El Universal. The translation is mine, but here’s the link to the original article, just in case you don’t believe that it really happened. After everything undocumented immigrants go through to get to the other side, this guy gets hit by lightening. I wonder of they’ll still deport him…
At least the gringos can say that God is on their side…

Wherever this article appears, it is always followed by another funny, little piece on a new program in New Jersey called “Adopt Me.” Apparently, Americans now have the opportunity to “adopt” undocumented immigrants.
I tried verifying the program’s existence, but when I looked for more information on Google, the only thing that came up was the exact same article and a number of pet adoption sites. Then I found it… Here’s the website in case you feel like adopting a Mexican.
I have to say that the program comes from a good place: a genuine desire to help, support and fight for undocumented immigrants. The only problem I have with it is that it comes across as a lot of American programs do- a bit paternalistic. You can adopt puppies and starving children in Africa, or even endangered animals… but a Mexican? A Guatemalan? Wouldn’t it be better to say something like “represent”?
En fin…
