Presidential Whims

There’s been a lot of talk lately about the new 20 peso bill. It seems they have taken off the eagle and replaced it with what some call a dove and others call a “stylized” eagle. The point is that the old eagle represented López Obrador, the leftist enemy to the ultra Right.

Blogotitlan makes an interesting comparison to the dollar, whose image has remained relatively constant since its inception. This projects the image of a relatively constant economy. Mexico, however, has seen a number of changes to their bills since the time of the New Peso. With each new president, new bills are put into circulation. So why is this important?

Because we see it everywhere. Here in Veracruz, our precious governor Fidel is painting the town red… literally. Since red is the color of his political party the PRI, we now see red taxis, red schools, red school supplies, red, red, red. Fidel donated paint to schools across town. He only had one color to offer, though. Now he’s in trouble with the corruption that ate away at the elections. The majority of the school supplies and other items he handed out are all red and many with PRI and fidelidad slogans plastered all over them. This is a definite mistake at election time. Let’s not forget to mention Fidel’s very own hymn “Uncle Fidel.”

Most governors who pass through Veracruz leave behind their very own license plate. They all promise that no one will ever have to buy another plate again. And they don’t, until the next governor arrives.

This is where you see where the real instability is. Political leaders here are legends in their own minds. That is more important than the good of the State, the betterment of the people, equality, justice or prosperity. The important thing here is to get as rich as you can as fast as you can and leave behind a president who is bigger than life.
