Falcons Sign Byron Leftwich

The Atlanta Falcons have been on the prowl for a big name quarterback ever since Michael Vick was suspended for the season. Although it took a while, they have finally found their guy. The Falcons signed ex-Jacksonville Jaguar quarterback Byron Leftwich to a two year $7 million contract. As you can imagine, paying a guy this much money means that he will immediately be in the running for the starting job.

In the Falcons first two games, quarterback Joey Harrington has led the team to only 10 points. The only other quarterback on the roster is Chris Redman, who has not competed in an NFL game in almost five years.

The signing of Leftwich will give the Falcons immediate depth at the quarterback position.

Leftwich played in six games for the Jaguars in 2007. He completed 109 of 184 passes for 1,158 yards. To go along with this, he passed for seven touchdowns.

There was a time when Leftwich was seen as one of the top young quarterbacks in the league. Over the past few seasons this perception has changed quite a bit, but all in all, Leftwich still has a lot left in the tank. Even though it seems as if he has been around forever, Leftwich is only 27 years old.

It will be interesting to see if Leftwich has what it takes to lead the Falcons offense to more points in the weeks to come. One thing is for sure, he does not have to do much in order to improve on the first two games of 2007.
