Broken Arrows

September 20, 2007

This blog entry has nothing to do with Mexico. It has nothing to do with immigration or Spanish. It’s about sudden changes that affect you in unexpected ways.

I used to read a blog called Arrows: Myth and Culture on a website by Maggie Macary, www.mythandculture.com. It was a daily journal in which Maggie talked about the mythological significance of everything. I read it every day and found inspiration in the mundane, in current events, in Maggie’s musings. I was, in fact, so inspired by her, I considered studying cultural mythology. But, I had to live up to my own myth. I stopped reading Maggie’s blog about a year ago. As these stories go, I often said to myself, “I should check out Maggie’s blog and see what’s new.” Daily life got busier and more complex and I never checked in to see what was new.

Until today. I finally took the time to stop back by her website. It wasn’t there. When I googled her name, the first thing I found was an article by “the late Maggie Macary.” The late? I kept on reading and found out that she unexpectedly passed away about a year ago.

Sudden deaths have a way of affecting us in unexpected ways. I never met Maggie. I hadn’t read her blog in almost a year. Even so, her death hit me. What hit just as hard was to see that her website is no longer up and running. I certainly hope that her contributions to myth and culture were not lost along with her. So here’s to Maggie Macary and the next phase of her mythic journey.

  1. Hi- I’m so sorry you discovered her passing this way. I was perusing for a certain essay of hers, doing a keyword when I turned up your tribute. It is so touching a tribute to Maggie’s life and loves! I’m sure what you share here in sharing what her words meant to you is shared by many others.

Thank you for posting the Arrows Guy. She was rather proud of him; her own unique design. I have permission from her family to republish as many of her essays as I wish under my banner which is mythopoetry.com and I will be doing this by and by and with the few I have copied to a hard file. The Arrows Guy will always be displayed in her memory.

    Love & Blessing,

  2. I, too, was googling for some of Maggie’s articles and found your post. I knew Maggie as a fellow student working on our doctorates together.

Maggie was vivacious, with a terrific sense of humor, and a gracious and generous spirit. She published some of my work on her site, and I always appreciated her insights. She is deeply missed by the Pacifica community, and your post reveals that her touch reached into the world well beyond her personal community.

Thank you, for honoring her this way.
