The MLB Playoffs: A Look at the American League

September 25, 2007

All year long, fans have been closely watching the MLB standings in an attempt to figure out which teams will make the playoffs. And even though there are approximately six games left for each team, the playoff picture still remains a bit cloudy. As you can imagine, this is going to make for a very exciting last week of the season.

Even though the Boston Red Sox have clinched a spot in the playoffs, they have yet to secure the East Division title. With only a two game lead over the second place Yankees, the Sox have some work to do during this last week.

In the Central Division, the Cleveland Indians have clinched the title. The same holds true for the Los Angeles Angels of the West Division.

So, this brings us to the question of which team is going to secure the wild card berth. The Yankees have a five game lead over the Detroit Tigers in this race. As long as they do not completely choke over the last week, they are all but ensured a spot in the post season.

It will be interesting to see which team comes out of the final week with the best record in the American League. Even though this may seem like a good thing, the club with the top record will have to face the wild card team in the first round. And at this point, it appears that the Yankees will be that team.
