Bears set to Bench Grossman
September 26, 2007
After leading the Chicago Bears to the Super Bowl last season, it appeared that Rex Grossman was well on his way to becoming one of the NFL’s elite quarterbacks. Despite several horrendous games in 2006, the Bears stuck with Grossman. But now that the team is off to a bad start this season, it appears that they are ready to make a change.
Reports are that Grossman will be benched for Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions. Backup Brian Griese is set to take over, and hopefully add a spark to the Bear’s anemic offense.
In Grossman’s most recent game, a loss to the Dallas Cowboys, he threw three interceptions. This season, he has a quarterback rating of 45.2, 500 yards passing, one touchdown, and six interceptions. For a team that looked so good at the end of last season, the Bears have yet to show it in 2007.
When it comes down to it, not all the blame can be put on Grossman. Sure, he has not played well, but the vaunted Bears defense is not performing up to par either. You can see this by taking a close look at the 34 points they surrendered to the Cowboys on Sunday night.
It will be interesting to see if Griese can step in and take Grossman’s place. He has started for teams in the past, and is a more than capable backup. But only time will tell if he has what it takes to lead the Bears.
