Deep-Rooted Feminism
September 27, 2007
There is an interesting article in the online periodical Criterio about Romani women and feminism. It touches on the fact that Romani women suffer double exploitation. They have a unique problem and a unique position in society. Soledad Fernández and Mercedes Porras and Enriqueta Valentí have created organizations to address these complex situations now confronting Romani girls and society in general.
According to Soledad Fernández and Mercedes Porras, Romani men are not all that machista, in spite of the negative stereotypes. They are no more machista than any other group of men. Their organizations invite men to join their fight for equality and self-empowerment. This is not about separation, but about uniting men and women from all cultural backgrounds to participate in positive discussion.
All three women agree that a very important part of self-awareness is becoming knowledgeable of one’s cultural heritage and traditions. In Spain, many Rom have lost touch with their roots. They say its time to learn what it means to be a Romani woman in today’s society.
At a recent conference, many gadje / paya / non-Romani women began to ask them why they defend a traditional wedding ceremony that includes verifying a woman’s virginity. The Romani women present responded that this is the only thing many gadje see when they look at Romani traditions. She explained that it is not an obligatory component of the marriage ceremony, and there is nothing tragic about it. Enriqueta went on to say that the important issue is that this ceremony be civilly recognized so as not to have to repeat the ceremony in the presence of a judge.
These women are taking major steps toward increasing dialogue and encouraging understanding between Romani and non-Romani women and between men and women throughout Spanish society.
