Talk About Degrading…

Here’s a recent quote from dear Mr. Chertoff:

“Illegal migrants really degrade the environment. I’ve seen pictures of human waste, garbage, discarded bottles and other human artifact in pristine areas. And believe me, that is the worst thing you can do to the environment.”

The worst thing?

Maybe we should ask Bush about the worst thing you can do to the environment. He’s got a lot of past actions to choose from. Since Chertoff was defending the construction of the border wall as an environmentally friendly act, I should mention that Bush decided to waive all environmental laws that might apply to the border wall. You can read a little about that here.

Chertoff insists on referring to our Mexican neighbors as something just short of human and talking about the wall as though it were some sort of protection against a dangerous pestilence bent on invading the great US of A. Maybe, just maybe, instead of this reactionary, racist diatribe, Chertoff and his compatriots should try nipping the problem in the bud in a much more humane way, like for instance, by investing in the Mexican economy, by helping to eradicate extreme poverty, unemployment and belittling jobs such as those found in maquiladoras.

That, though, would be counterproductive. After all, we depend on those dirty Mexicans to keep our economy afloat.

It’s like my husband ironically says, this is a job for the Department of Sanitation. If they really want to get rid of trash and human feces in pristine areas, they should scatter garbage bins and porta-potties throughout the desert and maybe a few shelters and watering holes while they’re at it.
