Halloween Ghost Stories (Story 2): Fisherman’s Catch
October 17, 2007
Another one of my favorite stories that has been told over the years:
Fisherman’s Catch- In the New York area some years ago, there is the story of a man who was out on his boat fishing with his dog. The fisherman started early in the morning and fished for three hours in his favorite spot without a single bite. Frustrated, he began to move around to different area of the lake, close to shore, the north, the south, but still nothing. Determined not to go home without at least one catch, he decided to travel out to the deepest part of the lake and try his luck there.
As he neared the center of the lake he felt a quiet stillness he had not noticed before. His dog became very agitated and began to pace back and forth very nervously. He wasn’t there but a few minutes when he felt something tug on the pole. It must have been huge he thought, as his pole lurched about in the depths of the cool waters. The began to bark, whimper, and whine loudly as the fisherman continued to fight his pole.
Soon the line began to come much easier and the dog began to bark ferociously over the edge towards the object he was bringing up. The man kept pushing the dog aside, but he continued to get in the way. With one final tug, a clump of brown mossy hair bubbled from under the boat. As the fisherman brought it aboard, his dog leaped from the boat and began to swim for the shore.
Just as he was about the throw the clump back and follow his dog, he noticed a beautiful diamond barrette attached to the clump. He tried with all his might to release the barrette, but it was too entangled in the thick matte to release it. He decided to bring the clump home to dry, so it would be much easier to get the barrette out. He knew his wife would love his find and want it for her jewelry collection.
Upon returning to shore, the man searched everywhere for his dog, but he was nowhere to be found. Deciding to return the next morning to continue his search, the fisherman packed his things in his car and returned home. His wife was pleased at the beauty of the barrette and told him to hang it by the fireplace to dry. Hours past and the barrette continued to drip on the stone floor. Blip… blip, blip, the hollow sound echoed through the quite, still room.
Hours past and still the clump of hair dripped as if it had just been pulled from the lake. It was at the point, the man and his wife began to realize what they had actually found and wondered how it had gotten there. Deciding their treasure was not worth holding onto if there was a chance of foul play, the man and his wife called the police and gave them the evidence.
After searching the bottom depths of the lake the police found the body of a young girl who had been murdered several nights ago. The clump did finally dry… but only hours after the girl had been pulled from the lake according to police…
… the dog never returned.
