Satanic Monsters, Catholicism and Other Spooky Things

October 30, 2007

María de la Luz González reported on the Catholic Church’s disdain for Halloween in her article in El universal. Here’s my translation:

The Archdiocese of Mexico called on all Catholics not to celebrate Halloween and not to dress up as monsters as this celebration goes against the Catholic faith.

The ecclesiastic institution dedicated yesterday’s edition of the informative report, Desde la fe, to Day of the Dead, which they contrasted to Halloween.

One of the articles mentions that Halloween “honors a culture of death which is the product of a blend of pagan customs.” They consider this to be quite serious as “neopagan groups, satanic celebrations and occultists are now identified with the holiday.”

The Church warns that this day has become associated with occultists in such a way that on the night of October 31st, black masses, spiritual cults and other gatherings “related to evil and occultism” will be held throughout Ireland, the United States, Mexico and many other countries.

“If we wish to be true to our faith and to the values of the Testaments, we must conclude that contemporary Halloween celebrations not only have nothing to do with the origin of the festivities, but are also harmful and contrary to the faith and to Christian life,” affirms the Archdiocese.

The institution also frowns upon dressing up as monsters as this is a tendency having to do with “expressions of evil (witches, black cats, vampires, ghosts and horrifying monsters) which are all promoted by satanic trends.”

The text advises Catholics to attend some of the various events that are held in churches throughout Mexico City to counteract Halloween’s influence, such as the contest about the life of the saints and the catechism that is given to children a few days before All Saints’ Day.

We’ll do our own contrasting tomorrow…
